Wifi 6E however adds an extra 500MHz of spectrum, adds 160MHz channels, and has a lower latency, and will generally reach faster speeds due to the higher 6Ghz spectrum. Wifi 5 to Wifi 6 only gains a few channels, I belive just an extra 4 20MHz, 2 40, and 1 80Mhz. I would not purchase just a wifi 6 router right now.

Thanks for your help in advance! I hope I'm not breaking any rules with this question, since it doesn't directly relate to building a pc :-)

I also have a few smart devices, but ones I wouldn't expect to stress the network: hue lights, smart air purifiers for my allergies, smart portable AC since I don't have central, and probably a few I'm forgetting. *Edit: all of these devices are new and use wifi 6, except perhaps my work laptop (I don't have it on hand to check) And I do often have the TV + laptop (sometimes + iPad) streaming for football/basketball. So the router does need to be friendly with Apple devices.

Network-heavy Devices: PS5, work laptop for WFH (windows), personal laptop (MacBook Pro), Apple TV 4K, iPad Pro and phone. I live in an apartment so I don't need crazy range, but who knows, maybe I'll buy a house in a few years, so maybe something mesh-able would be nice? (the recommended ASUS satisfies this)

I know that not many devices use it yet, but if I upgrade to 6 now will I just need to upgrade to 6E in 3 years? Is the calculation $200-300 now (wifi 6) and again in 3 years (wifi 6E), versus $500-600 now for wifi 6E? My only concern is for the reason I stated above (this router came out about a year ago).Īlso, since I am upgrading now, and since wifi 6E routers are coming out, it seems silly not to just go all the way and get wifi 6E. His job is to setup networks in stadiums and large buildings, so I trust his opinion. One of my friends has recommended the Asus RT-AX86U. And only a few 6E routers have come out so far, so I expect to see a whole new generation of routers hit the scene, any day now. So 6E could be driving improvements in performance all around, even for non-6E routers. Even if I don't go for wifi 6E, I've personally seen how technical advancements that happen on the high end (in this case, 6E) can often trickle down to the "lower tiers". Obviously chips get incrementally better each year, and it's often not a big enough bump to wait for, but it's timely now because the wifi 6E chips are starting to come out. I stress the second question because I work in the semiconductor industry, so I see the advances we make every year in my business. Does anyone have recommendations? Or, maybe more relevant, are there any good routers that are expected to come out soon that I should wait for?

My router is a few years old and doesn't have wifi 6, so I'm looking to upgrade.
